“Corgi breeds are taking the dog world by storm, and we are seeing a growing appreciation for these beloved herding dogs at an alarming rate. There are two main varieties of Corgi — the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi — each with their own unique qualities and characteristics!
From what we know, Corgis are one of the oldest herding breeds in the world, with roots tracing back to Wales over 3,000 years ago. Whether they were brought to Wales by Celtic tribes or Viking settlers is still debated among historians. Like any attempts at breeding and developing dogs, the end goal is to combine the most favorable qualities of the breed, making one extra favorable dog. As the Corgi breed developed over centuries, their intelligence, loyalty and herding instincts made them one of the most beloved breeds in the world, leaving us with quite the devoted Corgi fan base.”
“GET TO THE POINT Okay, okay, enough with the history lesson. The Corgi actually comes in two distinct and amazing varieties. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. If you don’t know about these amazing breeds I will give you a very quick overview:
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a herding breed originally bred to herd cattle and sheep in Wales. They are considered one of the most intelligent small breeds and you will see a lot of this breed in agility and obedience competitions. They have a moderate energy level and a playful, affectionate nature, making them a great fit for families of all sizes. One of the things that draw people to this breed is their adorable fox-like face, their short stubby legs, and their stunning coat colorations ranging from red and sable to tricolor.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of the oldest herding breeds in the world, and is distinguished from the Pembroke by their long tail and larger, more rounded ears. They are strikingly beautiful and blessed with a sweet, affectionate nature. Cardigans are generally laid back and easy-going but are always up for a romp with their owner, whom they live to please. Their dense double coat comes in a variety of colors including blue merle, brindle, and tricolor, making this dog a classic beauty.
Both Corgi varieties are incredibly smart, loyal, and loving companions who are perfect for families, individuals, and even those looking for a therapy or service dog candidate.”
“Now Corgis are a combination of all of these wonderful qualities! Because there are two distinct varieties of Corgi, you will find that breeders will specialize in one or both of these amazing breeds. Some breeders will focus solely on Pembrokes, others on Cardigans, and some like us will raise both varieties.
Here at My Corgi Puppy Farm we prefer to breed both the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. This helps us better control the quality and temperament of our puppies as we carefully select our breeding pairs. We try to ensure you have your fur-baby as long as possible and take great pride in breeding healthy, long-living Corgis that will be a part of your family for many years to come.”
WHAT MAKES THE CORGI DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BREEDS?
Everyone loves an intelligent, loyal, and adorable dog right? So why not just any small breed? The reason behind this is that many small breeds lack the intelligence, trainability, and working drive that makes the Corgi so special. Some small breeds can be overly yappy, stubborn, or difficult to train, but not the Corgi! Corgis are great for homes of all sizes and lifestyles, making them one of the most versatile breeds around. This is where our beautiful Corgi truly shines! Corgis are incredibly intelligent and have great endurance, but with that endurance comes a patient and mellow temperament that allows this dog to be equally at home on a farm or in a cozy apartment. They are the perfect balance of energy and calm, making them an ideal companion for families, singles, and seniors alike.
This brings that incredible herding energy to a more manageable level, and for all you athletic folks out there don’t discount this breed! Corgis will make great running, hiking and walking partners, but at the end of the day they can chill and relax on the couch with the family without bouncing off the walls 24/7.
LASTLY Ultimately, the one thing you must realize is that whether you are looking for a Pembroke or a Cardigan Corgi you MUST do your homework on the breeder. Health testing is a must to ensure your corgi puppy does not have any defects or abnormalities that should have never been passed down the gene pool. I have known reputable breeders to be just as varied in quality as some backyard breeders, so please, don’t just take the breed standard and believe all dog breeders will uphold the qualities of being a good and ethical dog breeder because they don’t. A well-bred Corgi from a responsible breeder will be just as healthy and sound as any other well-bred dog, it is all about the health and genetic testing to ensure sound offspring. I encourage you all to do your homework, talk to your breeder and be well-educated on the Corgi breed you are selecting before ever going into an agreement to take a puppy. We love our Pembroke Welsh Corgis and we love our Cardigan Welsh Corgis; each has amazing qualities.
